Live from New York

snlbook.jpg

Some say SNL will never be as good as it used to be. I think it’s slowly returning to be the gem of television it once was. If you like SNL as much as I do, do yourself a favor and pick up Live From New York by Thomas Shales and James Miller. The 30+ year history of the show produced some amazing stories, and they’re told from the view of those who were there. The book is written in a sort of chronological interview between the authors and the hundreds of people who walked the halls of studio 17. Inside info, celebrity in-fighting, horrible guests, sex, drugs…and a lot more drugs, it’s all there. Wanna know why Chevy Chase is banned from ever being on SNL again? Wanna know how the show even got on TV? Then Read it!

Daicon

daicon.jpg

It’s been a while since I’ve sat down and watched some anime. I had the pleasure of seeing Akira on the big screen back in the early 90’s at the Film Forum, a movie which sparked my interest in the genre. What most people never heard of is a little movement from the early 80’s which pretty much revolutionized the way animation was drawn/produced. A group of friends holed up in a tiny apartment would animate the opening short film of a yearly sci-fi convention in Japan. They called themselves Daicon Film (later changed to Gainax), and their name soon became syonymous with some of the most amazing animated shorts ever seen at that period. They hand drew each frame, and when you watch these films its hard to believe it was 1983. Check it out here.

Podcasts!: Part 2 (deux)

weekly.jpg

Weekly Drop is a podcast giving you the latest from the sneaker and streetwear scene. Hosted by industry gurus Jeff Carvalho, Rob Heppler, and Frank the Butcher, this show also serves up some great interviews with the likes of Dave White, Mr. Cartoon, Jeff Staple, Stash, Dave Ortiz, and David Gensler. They don’t update as much as I’d like, but it’s always a great morning when the updating icon pops up next to Weekly Drop in the iTunes playlist.

Old Games

elecplas.jpg

Electronic Plastic, designed by Buro Destruct, is a great book featuring tons of info and photos all about the history of hand-held electronic games. The writing is what you’d expect, but the pictures and design more than make up for it.
